Pros and Cons of Working for a Start-up Company

August 6th, 2010

For someone who is looking for a first job, there is a bigger tendency to eye one of the bigger companies. After all, the towering buildings, the household name of the company in a certain industry, plus all the ads everywhere—they are all signs of a successful company, and we always think that working for a successful company means we’re headed on the same path. However, what all of us should realize when we’re looking for jobs is that our success isn’t entirely dependent on the success of the company. That’s why it really takes a lot of courage and versatility to opt to work at a start-up company. If you are also considering working for one, you might want to know the pros and cons so you’ll know what to expect.

Getting Your Voice Heard

If you really want to contribute something great to a company, there is no better way for you to do it than to work for a start-up company. Compared to working for bigger companies, the chances of your getting heard is higher if you’re in a start-up company. That also means that you have a direct impact to the success of the company, and with one great successful project or decision, you could even retire rich and sooner than you expected.

However, as great as the advantage is, so is the disadvantage. Having a direct impact to the success of the company also means that you have a direct impact to its downfall. If you are a natural risk-taker and you love challenges, this should be able to motivate you more to do better at your job. However, if you prefer things to be simpler with less pressure on you with regards to the outcome of the company, then you’re probably better off working in a bigger company, where the chances of you getting blamed if they suddenly go bankrupt are little to zero.

Feeling of Family

The system in most corporations today is like this—you report to a superior, who report to a superior, who reports to someone else higher, and so on until it gets to someone reporting directly to the CEO. If you’re going to look at your position from bigger perspective, it would seem like you’re just a small dot in a galaxy. But when you’re working for a start-up company, most of the time everybody knows everyone else. There’s also a big chance that you’ll report to The Boss directly, which in turn will give you a better chance to get recognition for a job well done. Also, there’s a tighter bond among staff and there’s that feeling of family because you are always together.

The downside of it is that sometimes, when you’re too close with one another, the line between professional relationship and personal relationship is so thin that many people compromise both. Also, sometimes the quality of work is also compromised because the working environment is too causal or laid back.

Opportunities to be Versatile

Start-up companies provide a lot of good training and a variety or roles for you to fill. These are great opportunities for you to discover some of your skills and capabilities which you otherwise wouldn’t know you would discover if you worked for a bigger company. Because start-up companies usually have a small staff, there is a big chance that you will be asked to perform different duties. This could be made to your advantage because you’re going to learn new skills.

The downside of this is your lack of focus in an area of specialty. Being a Jack-of-all-trades can be a great thing, but if your job requires you to focus on more technical skills, doing too many things all the time can dull your other strengths and leave you doing things at a mediocre quality. So if this is already what you’re doing, make sure that you still give more focus on technical skills so at least you won’t get rough around the edges later on when you decide to look for another job.

With these pros and cons of working for a start-up company, you should be able to gauge what you thoughts are. Would it be a good career move for you if you start with a small company or would it be better if you get your training from one of the bigger ones first?

Pros and Cons of Working for a Large Company

August 2nd, 2010

You’re a fresh graduate. You have high hopes for your future career. You are already eyeing the biggest companies today and imagining yourself working in an office at the 34th floor or something, being all corporate and businesslike every day. While there is nothing wrong in wanting to work for a large corporation, you should be aware of the pros and cons of working for one so you can gauge which environment you would be more comfortable in.

Benefits

Probably the biggest advantage that attracts a lot of job seekers in wanting to work for big company are the benefits like health insurance, allowances, big signing bonuses, plus other incentives that could be given to them for a job well done. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want a good-paying job at a prestigious company right after graduation?

However, while this might be attractive, you should know that everything comes with a catch. There are companies who give out really big signing bonuses but it is entailed with a big responsibility. The reason they give signing bonuses is that they want to make sure that you are going to hold your end of the deal, and your end of the deal is usually to stay a specific number of years or else you’ll have to return the entire amount of the signing bonus. Just think of it this way, for them to provide a large signing bonus means that they really want you to last for at least a year or two, and that they know there’s a possibility that you will want out of the company before that happens.

Prestige

Another reason a lot of people want to work for big corporations is the prestige. Somehow people take pride in telling other people where they work, like they feel more important to the company than they actually are. Some people just want to be able to say that they work for that particular company, regardless of their position. We can’t blame them. There are a lot of people who go through life thinking that the name of the company you work in is as important as your role in it.

While it may be true of some companies, there are also some monster companies that won’t even acknowledge your existence. There are companies where you are merely a dot in a big universe of employees nationwide. In some cases, even if your existence is acknowledged, it would still be difficult most of the time for you to be seen or heard. And if ever you do get heard, there is still no assurance that your opinion would matter or would even have an impact to the decisions the company will make.

Long-term Security

We always see a lot of people who are successful in big companies and who have been working there for 5 years onwards. Seeing this inspires a lot of us to do the same. This is one of the nicest advantages of working for a big company—long-term security. Especially if your position is a technical one and you already have a set career path, working for a big and stable company will ensure you of your future.

But that also means doing the same or similar job possibly for the rest of your life. Yes, you will have to undertake different roles from time to time, but if you have a really technical job, chances are you will have to stick with it until your retirement.

Knowing these pros and cons, you should find it easier to decide whether or not it would be a good career move for you to go after a big company.

Top 5 Tips for Attending the Career Circle 2010: The Alumni Fair

July 22nd, 2010

The Career Circle 2010 is heading out to be the most important career fair anyone could ever attend this year. Make sure that you are already pre-registered before the month is over to get access to the biggest companies and get a chance to be hired on the spot. But you need to be prepared before you head out to Gateway Mall on August 16-18 to attend the Career Circle 2010. Here are top 5 tips to guide you through the career fair and to make sure that you manage your time well.

career circle 2010

1.Always bring the essentials. Make sure that you have enough resumes to last you throughout the 3-day career fair. There are going to be a lot of companies at the Career Circle 2010, so you want to make sure that you are always prepared to present a resume when it’s requested.

Some of the most known companies that are going to be featured in the career fair are Sykes Asia, IBM, Pascual Laboratories, Vidres, and a lot more. If you have been dying to begin your career with these companies, attending the Career Circle 2010 is the perfect opportunity.

2.Research enough information about the participating companies. It’s the rule of thumb that when you apply for a position in a particular company, you should definitely be familiar with the services offered by the company, or at least the specific role that you would be having should you get hired on the spot. Being knowledgeable about the position and the company are very good credibility boosters, so even before you head out there, you should already learn a thing or two about the participating companies in the career fair, and the following information should be able to help you a little.

Sykes Asia – Although known to many as a call center company, Sykes has a lot more services to offer, and a number of non-agent positions to offer job seekers. For instance, you can join their support group if you are looking for a career as a web designer and developer, core skills trainer, software engineer, and more.

IBM – For some, IBM is just another company for computers. For others, IBM is another call center company where they can earn a lot from. But IBM is also more than just a call center company. From developing hardwares and softwares to research to consulting, IBM has proven to be one of the top companies to rely one. So if you see yourself growing with IBM, there are positions available such as technical writer, Tivoli storage team lead, managing consultant, and more!

NCO – Known to be currently the world’s biggest collection agency, NCO focuses in customer service and outsourcing. Catering to clients worldwide, it is just proper for NCO to be needing a diverse group of individuals as well to join their team. If you would like to join their team as a Spanish-speaking agent, collections agent, or a technical support representatives for a gaming console account, get ready with your resume and portfolio before you head out to the Career Circle 2010!

3.Consider more options. As mentioned previously, while the companies are primarily known in the call center industry, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they offer only call center agent positions. Sometimes, all it takes is a having a broader perspective to see what you’ve been searching for all this time. So scratch the concept that these companies have only call center agents in their companies. You are going to get more and better options if you open your mind to these kinds of opportunities and you may land in the best job you will ever have.

4.Manage your time effectively. The Career Circle 2010 is a perfect opportunity for you to not only find a job, but to find out more about the different industries today and learn about the changing trends of the job hunting process. If you want to make the most of your time during the three-day seminar, you need to use your time wisely. Remember, there are a lot more in store for you in the Career Circle 2010 and believe me, you don’t want to miss out!

What you can do is find out about the participating companies, and create a schedule on how many you can visit in a day. Then allot some time participating in the learning sessions that are also going to be conducted and which are headed by the participating companies.

5.Enjoy! The Career Circle 2010 is not like an ordinary job fair you have attended in the past. It’s a career event. You are going to experience more than send your applications to these companies. There’s an open mic, contests, prizes to be won like GCs to Netopia, MEMO, Bridge Language School, plus a lot of other cool stuff from Sykes Asia, Roundbox Solutions, OJTCareers.com, TrabahoPhilippines.com, and more!

So with these tips, you are now ready to attend the most exciting and biggest career event of the year! Register now for the Career Circle 2010: The Alumni Fair on their website and mark your calendars on August 16-18!

4 Steps to Planning Your Career Successfully

July 13th, 2010

See How Easily You Can Direct Your Career Path Straight to Success!

Not a lot students may realize this, but college and career planning should go hand in hand. Your career planning shouldn’t start when you’re just months away from graduation. It should have started the moment you entered college and chose your course. But if if you haven’t, it’s still not too late for you so don’t worry. Here are 4 steps to planning your career successfully and steering you into the right direction.

1. Evaluate your strengths. The first thing that you have to do before you can arrange everything else is to identify your strengths. If you know where you’re good at and what are your areas of interest, it would be easier for you to narrow down the path to your perfect job. Are you good in music? Do you enjoy spending time with kids? Is photography your passion? These are just examples of questions you can ask yourself. To help you better in assessing your strengths, you should also ask your family and friends.

2. Research about potential occupations. Once you know your strong points and what skills you have to excel, it’s time that you find a field where those skills can be put to work and where you can grow professionally and learn a lot from. But there is something important that you should know about researching about potential careers in the future. You should not limit your search to just general information about the company and the position. Especially if you’re still in college, what you should focus in finding out are the day-to-day duties for the different occupations you are considering. Are you going to be dealing with a lot of clients or is it generally a desk job with only the computer you’re going to be facing the whole day? Try also to find out if a lot of people in that job advance quickly towards the career ladder because you don’t want to be stuck doing the same thing after five years.

3. Find out about the saturation of your target occupation. This is a very important step in choosing a career, because there are times when a seemingly good idea today turns out to be one of your worst decisions after a few years. A few years ago, Nursing seemed to be the best course to take because there were a lot of job offers here and abroad and the pay was good. But a few years and hundreds of thousands of Nursing graduates later, a lot of hospitals are already fully staffed and a lot of Nursing students are deviating into other fields in the hope of landing a job faster.

4. Volunteer or Get a Part-time Job. There is no better way to find out if you are comfortable with your target occupation than to test it out. If you are still not qualified to be an OJT, there are a lot of companies who are readily accepting volunteers. There are a lot of sources where you can find part-time jobs, starting of course with OJTCareers.com. You can also check out your school’s placement office, nearby local hospitals if you want a medical job, and non-profit organizations where you can offer your service. The deal is that you get a first-hand experience of what to expect about the job, that way you can gauge how much preparation you still need and what things you still need to learn.

These steps to planning your career are very crucial especially if you are still a bit confused now. After all, it’s your future. It’s only proper that you take the necessary measures in ensuring that you are in control of it.

OJT Careers Conducts an Awesome Seminar in Manila Central University

July 7th, 2010

Last Saturday, July 3, the OJT Careers Team found themselves driving along Roxas Blvd., on the way to Caloocan to pay a visit to the Computer Studies Department in Manila Central University (MCU) and share a few things about job hunting that could help the students for when they graduate.

Geared with their presentations and some fun activities, the whole team made way for the seminar entitled, “Fire Up Your Potential with OJTCareers.com” in partnership with TrabahoPhilippines.com. The team discussed about the most important things to remember during the job application process, especially for graduating student. These included resume and cover letter writing, job hunting strategies, job interview tips, and a bonus discussion on personality development.

The team had fun in the interactive discussions mostly because the students themselves were very participative and attentive. It was very rewarding that these students were taking down pointers during the discussion and that they were asking questions that would help them when they finally join the real world and look for their first full-time job.

The discussion about personality development was especially fun because of the interaction among students. They were able to find out a lot of interesting things about themselves and their friends, all of which could help improve their perception of themselves and of others, which in turn would build their self confidence and gear them up for the competitive world of job hunting.

Overall, it’s an understatement to say that the OJT Careers seminar was a success. In truth, it was nothing short of awesome. Mr. Avonn Nova, Dean of the Computer Studies Department, Ms. Malou and Ms. Marlyn were all very accommodating. The OJT Careers Team definitely enjoyed interacting with a great crowd. And the best part about all this is that the seminar was FREE.

If you are also interested for the team to visit your school and have a free seminar just like what happened in MCU, all you have to do is send an email to ojtcareer@gmail.com. In the meantime, here are some of the pics from the seminar. Enjoy!

Work Ethics for OJTs – Which of These Mistakes Are You Committing?

June 11th, 2010

One of the most important things that OJTs can get out of their internship, more than the technical skills, are work ethics. These are as essential as any of the other skills you are going to learn. Without these, your internship will be in vain, and you will not have learned anything at all after two or three months. To those who will be having their OJTs in the coming semester, and to those who are still having them, here are just some of the most important OJT blunders that you will have to avoid for you to learn the proper work ethics.

1.Being late and not informing your direct supervisor about it. A lot of college students get away with tardiness in their college classes, partly because some professors are more lenient to their attendance. But that doesn’t mean that it is allowable in the workplace. Being an OJT means that you are accepting the role of a regular employee, and forgetting about being a student, if only for a few months. That means that you should adhere to the office rules, and not act as if you are going to get away with your tardiness just because you are student. Naturally, the same goes with absences. We all know that in college, excuse letters are not required because depends only the professor. However, during the internship, you are not just going to the office for the sake of completing your hours. You report to the office to have work done, and being absent (and not informing your supervisor about it) will affect the work of everyone else in the office.

2.Not adhering to dress codes. Some students think that they will look cool dressing like a teenager in the workplace because they will standout from everyone else, but that’s wrong. Your internship is a perfect place for you to learn how to dress properly for when you’re already working. Following the dress code in the office not only creates a good impression to your superiors but also gives you a sense of being professional, puts you in a good mood and lets you do your job better. In short, it’s win-win situation.

3.Using social networking sites in the office. It’s unbelievable but there are some interns who actually think it’s okay to log in to Facebook or use Yahoo! Messenger while in the office, even when the bosses are around. It’s not ethical by default, even if your boss doesn’t call your attention because of it. You have to take it upon yourself to know these things because there is no superpower dictating that these are wrong. It only takes logic to realize it.

4.Not being courteous to superiors. There are OJTs who don’t greet their superiors good morning or even say hello when they meet at the corridors, on account of their being shy. But that shouldn’t be the case, because, believe me, no one should be shy enough to not even greet someone good morning—unless it’s a pathological condition, in which case should be reported to the supervisors to be dealt with accordingly. Another courtesy issue is OJTs saying “no” to work given to them. While we are not perfect and cannot do everything that will be assigned to us, a little effort in trying wouldn’t hurt. It could actually go a long way, instead of rejecting the request of your boss flatly. Even if you can’t do the job, tell your boss that you are not sure if you can, but you will still try. That way, if ever you really can’t accomplish it, at least you gave your boss the heads up, and if you do accomplish it, then you learned something new.

5.Not having respect for office property. You are going to work in an office and going to use some of the office equipment. It is just proper that you take care whatever you use in there because a) it’s not yours, b) you will be liable for anything you break or lose, and c) it’s not a good impression if you do.

6.Badmouthing the company after the OJT experience. Not all OJTs will have a wonderful experience with their internship, that’s the bitter truth. But that’s not an excuse to tell all your friends how much of an annoyance your boss had been, or how your office life had been like a concentration camp where all sources of happiness have been sucked dry. Not only will this reflect a bad reputation on YOU, but it might also be a cause of bad karma for you in the future. Moreover, even if you did have a bad experience during your internship, it still doesn’t follow that you didn’t learn anything. Every experience, may it be bad or good, is a learning experience. So if you can’t look at your internship any other way, at least look at it that way.

There are more things to learn during your OJT, so don’t neglect the simple office rules because they will come in handy in the future when you’re already working on your full-time job. So better keep these things in mind to help you cope with office life easier in the future. You may not believe it right now, but it will help you later on.

Is Being a Jejemon Stopping You From Getting Your First Job?

May 5th, 2010

Let’s admit it, they’re everywhere. You might even be one of them but you’re not aware of it. But apart from the annoying way they write and express their feelings, what are the other nuisances of being a Jejemon and when do you have to set a limitation for using Jejemon speak?

Jejemons are mostly those people in their teen years, but there might be a small number of them who are already college graduates. If you’re a self-proclaimed Jejemon who’s already out of college and are looking for your first job, you might want to reconsider your way of texting or writing, especially when it comes to job hunting.

While you might come across a company which has a seemingly friendly environment, it doesn’t necessarily follow that you can speak however you want to in your cover letter and when replying to text messages. There are still guidelines that you have to follow. If you’re wondering why you haven’t been contacted for an interview schedule, you might be neglecting these following guidelines when job hunting:

1.Write a cover letter when you send in your resume through email
FACT: It’s not okay to leave the body of the email blank and just attach your resume when you’re applying online.
FACT: It’s worse to just say a simple “Hi” or even “Please hire me” on the body of the email.
FICTION: You don’t have to bother writing a cover letter when you know that your resume is already good.

2.Use proper English or Tagalog in your cover letter and when responding to the employers
FACT: If you get lucky enough to be contacted by an employer despite the previous blunder, you have to exert extra effort in maintaining the communication that you have. If you respond with jeje speak, you’re just throwing the opportunity away.
FACT: Business English isn’t mandatory, but you have to at least be polite with your response email.
FICTION: You can’t respond in Tagalog when you’ve been emailed in English. You actually can, especially if you don’t know how to express yourself in English well. But you have to make sure that it’s straight Tagalog as well, and maintain the politeness.

3.Respond properly through text. If you can help it, don’t make your message shorthand and unreadable. And of course, avoid using Jeje language at all costs!
FACT: Employers are nitpicks when it comes on the impression an applicant makes through his responses.
FACT: Grammar isn’t that big of a deal to some employers, but it is when you’re applying for a media-related or communications job.
FICTION: Employers base everything on what they read on your resume. Don’t be too sure-footed if you think that your resume is impressive. Sometimes, your communication skill is a bigger factor for some employers.

In job hunting, there are a lot at stake. Think of your job application as going to a blind date. You have to be impressive and dress well, put out your best foot forward, and of course back up everything you say or do with proof. There’s probably nothing wrong with being a Jejemon if you’re talking with your peers, but when it comes to applying for a job, you should learn the etiquette and follow them if you don’t want to stay a bum forever.
