Last Feb 26, 2010, the OJTCareers team together with our partner company TrabahoPhilippines.com, took part in the job fair held at Siena College in QC. It was a fun experience, and we got to meet representatives of companies as well as students. The job fair was from 1-4pm, and the guidance counselor Ms. Rizalyn Salac was very nice and accommodating.

It had been a great chance for the team to meet students and tell them about the service of the site. Most of the students that went to the booth had inquiries about different things, but there are particular areas that they are most concerned with. And to address those needs, rest assured that there will be more advice about how to go through job interviews and where to look for job openings.

The students also enjoyed the freebies that we gave out as a thank you for participating in the survey we conducted. Plus they got a chance to have a feel on how to apply using OJTCareers.com through the presentation that we prepared.

The job fair in Siena College had been a success for everyone, as the students were able to find a new resource to find OJT jobs easier. Until next job fair, students! Watch out for us because we might invade your school next!

Who Else Wants to Get Hired This Summer?

Now that summer is coming up, a lot of people are already making their respective summer plans. But for college students, summer usually means it’s time they find a company they can have their OJT or just a summer job they can involve themselves in to still get an allowance. Fortunately for them, there are a lot of companies today who are particularly looking for OJTs and part-timers. Here are some of the summer job ideas that you can consider, whether you’re living in Manila or not.

Call Center Companies
Most of the time, people living in Manila and Makati have the advantage of finding different summer jobs. The most common summer jobs available today still include call center companies like TeleTech, ePerformax, ACS, and Covergys. These companies are always hiring throughout the year, and they have a number of branches throughout Manila. They usually also have special spots for college students. If you’re looking for a job which will hone your communication skills and if you don’t mind the shifting schedule, working at a call center could be a great opportunity for you, if only for a few months.

Coffee Shops
Coffee shops particularly Starbucks have boomed in the recent years because it has been an unexpected hit among the youth. 10 years ago, you wouldn’t see someone at the age of 20 having coffee at 12 noon, but now that trend has changed. Having a foamy frappe for lunch has almost become a staple among teens. And the best news for teens? Working in coffee shops is as much fun as hanging out there. Starbucks and other popular shops here are also always on the lookout for baristas and cashiers, and other positions. The schedule is also flexible to fit yours. If you think you’ll enjoy working in this kind of environment, there are more than twenty locations in Ayala, Makati alone and more than a hundred in Makati and Manila.

Fast Food Chains
Before the coffee shops and the call center companies boomed, the typical teenager’s first refuge for a summer job would be a fast food chain like Jollibee, McDonald’s, etc. It’s because fast food chains always hire students and they are willing to give you a schedule that won’t coincide with your your schedule in school. Also, fast food chains aren’t that strict with the qualifications.

Different University Departments
If you don’t want to go far or go the extra mile in looking for a summer job. The most convenient way for you is to look for vacancies in your own university. Most of the time, different departments are looking for a student assistant, so if your university is accessible to you, you should consider checking your university’s bulletin boards for possible positions you could fill in.

These are just some ideas you can consider if you’re looking for a summer job. These work either it’s for your OJT or you just want to earn. On a related note, you can increase you chances of getting hired this summer through these articles:

Discover What Qualities Employers Are Looking For Today

There’s a world of difference in applying for a job today and five years ago. Previously, a college degree is mostly what you need to have an edge against other applicants. But now, there are just so much available resources for improving your skills and expanding your field of interest that it’s almost not acceptable that you’re only good in one specific field. Find out the reality in job hunting now. These are especially helpful to first time job seekers so that they know how they’ll position themselves against other applicants today.

A college degree is not enough. As mentioned above, five years ago having graduated from a decent university might have already been good enough for a lot of employers. But with the surge or technology, qualifications and expectations have changed immensely, and competition has become stiffer. The increasing number of unemployed fresh graduates should already tell you how tough competition is and should be able to prompt you to focus more on developing your skills rather than bragging about where you graduated.

Experience is necessary. Whether it’s from an internship, organizations which you participated and learned greatly from, employers consider any kind of experience a plus in choosing applicants. Of course, you should back up your experience with proof, and this is where your skills and qualifications will come in. Experience where you didn’t learn anything significant from is not that attractive to employers.

Being internet-savvy pays. Almost all kinds of job require you to be knowledgeable with at least the Microsoft Office applications and the basics of using the internet. Luddites have little chance of keeping up with the fast-paced working environment out there so you better condition yourself and gauge your technical skills to see how you can have an edge against other applicants.

Soft skills are just as important. Nowadays, individuals are realizing more and more that they are capable of doing things that are beyond what they learned from school, and employers are aware of this as well. So one of the best things you can do to get that edge is be a Jack of all Trades. Focus on developing your creative, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

With these changes in employers’ expectations, first time job seekers and those who are planning to shift careers should be mindful of what should go into their resume.

How to Manage Stress Level at Work

A lot of people equate work to being stressed, and it particularly puts a stigma to first time job seekers and OJTs. However, contrary to popular belief, work doesn’t always have to be stressful. With these tips, you can stay focused on your work and lessen the stress you feel, and further more you can enjoy doing your work more.

Laugh. It may sound cliché but laughter is still the best medicine. Or at least, happiness is. When you start to realize that stress is beginning to get the best of you, stop for a minute and take a time off from whatever you’re doing. Spend a few minutes reading about something funny or at least fun. After your short break, your mind will feel refreshed and you’re going to have a renewed sense of spirit. And the best thing about it is that you’re going to have enough energy again to face your work head on.

Write. When stressed, people usually don’t have a clear mind. And when you can’t think properly, you won’t be able to solve whatever has been stressing you out. One effective solution to reduce stress at work is to put it into writing. If you’re stressed about whether you should stay or leave your job, a detailed list of pros and cons will help you have a clearer perspective and enable you to make a better decision.

Talk. Sometimes when you’re stressed, bad thoughts will keep getting to you and later on, you become more close-minded because stress has piled up. To avoid this, one of the most effective stress busters is to have a friend to talk to. Sometimes, all you need is an advice from a friend to let you see things more clearly and consider things as impartial as possible. One thing you have to remember though is to pick a friend you can trust and who will understand how you feel, but at the same time be impartial and honest with the advice.

Balance. One of the most common causes of stress is imbalance. Whether it’s with the schedule or with the workload, when you get out of balance, everything will start falling apart and that’s what you want to avoid. Creating a list or keeping an organizer is an effective way to keep balance in everything you do, not to mention it will keep you more organized and make things easier for you to do in the future.

With these ways to reduce stress at work, you will be more productive, have more fun and less stress at your workplace.

Attending job fairs is one of the most convenient ways to apply for a job, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll get a job easier this way.

If you’re going to attend a job fair this 2010, make sure that you are fully prepared for it, especially because some companies conduct an on-the-spot interview. If you went there wearing casual clothes, thinking that you are only going to be passing your resume, you may immediately leave a bad impression to the employers. So to maximize your chance of getting hired in job fairs, or at least landing an interview right there and then, you need to remember a few things.

First of all, remember that attending job fairs is a numbers game. Because it’s convenient, expect hundreds or even thousands of other applicants to show up there as well. So you need to have a strategy about how to go about the job fair. If you want to work in a specific field, research beforehand about the participating companies who will be in the job fair. This way, when you get there, you know exactly where to go and how many copies of resume you should bring. Researching beforehand will also give you the chance to know a little about the company, so if ever you are invited for an interview in the job fair, you’ll be prepared to answer questions about their company.

Second, prepare what you’re going to say about yourself. Avoid saying the usual things that are already written in your resume like the personal information. Instead, think of your spiel as a sales pitch in which you are the product and you are trying to sell your services. Prepare also some questions you have about the company. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because it only shows that you are interested enough about the company to know more about them.

Third, it goes on without saying that you should be dressed appropriately. A job fair is an even not only for you to submit your resume. A lot of companies are actually hiring applicants on the spot, especially when they see those individuals who came fully prepared. So if you really want to get hired, keep these things in mind next time you are going to attend a job fair.

What You Can Do To Make the Most of Online Job Hunting

With today’s age of technology, almost everything can be done without leaving the house. You can already do shopping and selling online as well as different bank transactions. Furthermore, you can look for jobs and sometimes even get hired online as well. Most people today, especially students looking for OJTs do it online because of the convenience it brings them. But just because searching for jobs to apply for has become easy, it doesn’t mean that you already have a bigger chance of getting the job.

So if you really want to get the job, here are online job hunting strategies that you should always keep in mind to make sure that you get the most of the convenience of the internet in getting the job.

First, don’t do a shot-gun application by just choosing random job postings and sending your resumes without thinking it over or knowing more about the company. Researching about the companies you wish to work for can be very helpful especially when you get called for an interview. When you get asked what you know about the company, the interviewer will be impressed if you answer properly and sufficiently.

Second, cut and paste your resume on the body of your email instead of making it an attachment. There are a lot of viruses in the cyberspace already, and sometimes employers are very apprehensive about opening at attachment, especially if you already didn’t impress him with your cover letter.

Third, don’t just wait for a response from one company you sent your resume online to. As I’ve mentioned earlier, just because job hunting online is faster and easier, it doesn’t mean that you’ll get the job immediately. So it’s better if you be aggressive on your job application and make sure to follow it up with the employer so you won’t have idle time just waiting for results.

Also, when you’re applying for a job online, why not make the most of the convenience as well. Be sure to apply to several jobs online while making sure that you research about each of the company. This way, you will have more options later on and you won’t waste time when you apply for another job only after you’ve heard about the previous one you’ve applied for. Following these online job hunting strategies will make you more efficient in job hunting online and will guarantee you better results over time.

Write a Good Objective Statement For Your Resume

When you hand in your resume, one of the first things the interviewer is going to read is your career objective. A lot of times, this has been a deal breaker for a lot of applicants because 1) they usually apply for different positions but they never change their resume objective, and 2) they give a too general objective that it’s already vague, thus making you seem uncertain.

The real problem about job seekers not being able to write a good resume objective is in their perception of what it is. Most of the time, they just put the objective right after they write the contents of their resume, just like an after-thought. However, there’s a reason why it comes before the rest of your resume. It has a significance that’s why it’s placed even before your qualifications and other information about you.

The first thing you should NOT do is write the rest of the contents of your resume before writing the objective. It should be the other way around. The rest of your resume should be based on your objective, so you’ll know which skills and qualifications you have that you need to highlight. That being said, here are things you need to remember before you write your objective.

First, be concise. Your objective should be specific to the job you’re applying for and to the skills that you can offer.

Second, instead of making your objective a sentence, use verb phrases. For example, “Seeking…” instead of “I seek…”. This is because verb phrases sound more driven an aggressive.

Third, make sure that your objective goes with the rest of the resume. It’s an eyesore for interviewers if they see that the applicant is very careless in writing a wrong resume objective that doesn’t match with anything in his resume.

Fourth, state how you can be an asset to the company instead of telling what you would like to gain from it. For instance, saying “Seeking a position in the Human Resources Department where I can utilize my skills in Behavioral Psychology” instead of saying “Seeking a position in the Human Resources Department where I can apply myself and learn from the best”.

With these resume objective tips in mind, OJTs who are just getting the taste of the real world and those first time job seekers who are also still a bit on the blind side can gear up better in writing their resume and getting a bigger chance at being hired.
