You’re fresh out of college, and now it’s time for your first real job hunt. You are overwhelmed and excited at the same time at the thought of sending your very well-thought out resume, thanks to the sample resumes you found online for guidelines. But when it’s time to look for companies you want to apply at, you realize something.

Almost everyone is looking for applicants with at least a year of experience behind them. Sure you see an occasional “fresh grads are welcomed to apply” but you know that they’re just pulling your leg. It finally dawns on you that what everyone else had been saying to you was true, that it’s going to be difficult for you to compete out there.

However, you don’t have to lose spirit immediately, because there are common myths in job hunting that make fresh graduates easily discouraged. Find out what’s the real score when it comes to first-time job hunting.

Myth 1: It’s easier to find a job in advertised jobs and companies

A lot of applicants, especially fresh graduates, think that it’s way easier to look for jobs in the most common places, like job posts in your school bulletin board, or different online job search directories. However, while this helps applicants to have a convenience place to look for jobs, it doesn’t mean that they are easily going to get it.

The truth is, competition is tighter in jobs posted in more well-known means and sources, not to mention quite chaotic. On the other hand, job vacancies in the more hidden job market, and which just passes through word of mouth are still unknown to applicants today.

Ultimately, if you know that you have the necessary skills and intelligence, knowing where to look for the right jobs should be your next goal.

Myth 2: Applicants with the best qualifications get hired easily, and the inexperienced ones don’t stand a chance

You might be surprised to hear this, but the truth is, companies seldom hire applicants with the “best” qualifications in their resumes. The reason is simple. It’s difficult to really gauge the “best” qualities and qualifications during a job interview. On the other hand, being pleasant, persistent, intelligent, and confident are all aspects that can easily be measured during the interview, and which experienced and inexperienced applicants all have.

So if you don’t have any previous experience yet, don’t hold back in applying to the monster companies as long as you’re confident that you can be competitive in the field. Also, it’s important to NOT highlight the fact that you don’t have experience yet and make it one of your weaknesses. Instead, make it your strength and say that despite your lack of experience working in the real world, you have the necessary skills and the right attitude to be as competitive as the others.
